Holidays Can Be Tough
The holidays can feel joyful for many — but for others it is a lonely time. If you’re missing loved ones or feeling out of step with the season, you’re not alone.
The quieter moments of the holidays often bring memories of people we miss or traditions that have changed. These feelings are natural, especially if your routines shift or social opportunities are limited. But staying engaged in your community — through recreation, friendships, and even volunteering — can reframe your outlook and boost your spirits.
Why Staying Connected Matters
Studies around the world support the idea that social connection — whether through friends, recreation, or service — can play a protective role against loneliness and its negative health effects. Participating in group recreational activities or gathering with friends helps to ease feelings of isolation. It may come through a shared laugh during a craft project, a group outing to see holiday lights, or a simple afternoon chatting with friends. These joyful experiences promote a sense of belonging and help us feel supported.
Volunteering Builds Connection Too
What better way to connect with others than through volunteerism. Giving time and and expressing kindness during the holidays is a powerful mood booster because it:
Creates shared experiences
Builds a sense of purpose and community
Turns loneliness into meaningful engagement
Whether helping with an event, prepping materials, or joining a group service project, volunteering lifts both the giver and the community.
You’re Not Alone
Feeling lonely during the holidays is part of being human. Reaching out, showing up, and engaging with others — through fun, service, or both — can bring comfort, belonging, and renewed joy. And, these moments don't need to be elaborate. They simply need to be shared to add warmth and connection to the season.
If you or someone you know could use some extra connecting this season, we invite you to volunteer at an upcoming event. Visit https://www.lifebridgestl.org/newsletters to read more about upcoming events or reach out to Pat Martchink at patrickm@lifebridgestl.org.
